Is my home suitable for a heat pump? The honest answer

It’s usually the first thing people ask — often because they have heard that heat pumps “only work in new builds”. The reality is more useful: a well-designed air source heat pump can keep many UK homes warm. Some homes are ready now; others need a little preparation first.

The trick is knowing which one yours is before you commit. That’s what a home survey is for, and this article explains what the surveyor checks.

The one question a survey answers

When a surveyor visits, they’re only working out one thing: how quickly does your home lose its warmth on a cold winter’s day?

They’ll go room by room, looking at your walls, windows, floors and ceilings, and how well each one keeps the heat in. Think of it like checking a flask: the better it holds its temperature, the less energy it takes to keep things warm inside.

From that, they can tell you what size heat pump you need, and whether the rest of your heating (mainly your radiators) is ready for it.

Here’s the bit worth remembering: the age or style of your house does not answer the question on its own. Two identical houses on the same street can be worlds apart — one had its loft insulated years ago, the other hasn’t been touched since the eighties. A good survey looks at your home, not homes like it.

Insulation: the thing that matters most

A boiler heats your home in shorter, higher-temperature bursts. A heat pump works differently: it keeps your home warm gently and steadily, all day. That works brilliantly when the warmth it makes stays indoors.

You don’t need a hi-tech eco house for that. If your loft has a good thick layer of insulation and your walls have been insulated too, you’re probably in great shape already. Double glazing helps too, but the survey needs to consider the whole building rather than one feature in isolation.

And if your insulation is poor? Sort that first, not because a heat pump couldn’t cope, but because you’d be paying more to heat a home that’s leaking warmth. Topping up a loft is one of the cheapest home improvements there is, and it saves you money no matter what’s doing the heating.

Radiators: some might need to grow

A boiler pumps very hot water round your radiators. A heat pump uses warm water instead — that’s part of why it’s so efficient. But warm water means each radiator gives off a little less heat, so a few rooms might need a bigger radiator to feel just as cosy.

This is not automatically a whole-house job. Some homes need only a few radiators changed; others need more. A room-by-room heat-loss calculation tells you which ones and why. Modern radiators can also provide more output without looking dramatically bigger on the wall.

Got underfloor heating anywhere? Even better. It loves warm water and it’s why heat pumps and underfloor heating are such a natural pair.

Hot water: you’ll usually need a cylinder

A heat pump warms your hot water in advance and stores it in a tank, rather than heating it the moment you turn the tap. So, the tank needs to live somewhere, and if your current boiler doesn’t have one, this is the bit that catches most people out.

The good news is that today’s tanks are slimmer and much better insulated than the big copper ones you might remember from your grandma’s house. Airing cupboards, lofts, garages and utility rooms are all common homes for one. And if space is tight, there are slim and compact options; it’s a puzzle to solve, not a deal-breaker.

So, is your home ready?

A home that’s ready today usually looks like this: a well-insulated loft and walls, mostly double glazing, radiators that already heat rooms easily, and a spot for a hot water tank. Sound like yours? A heat pump could probably go in without much fuss at all.

A home that needs a bit of prep might have thin insulation, a couple of chilly rooms, or nowhere obvious for a tank. None of that is a no, they’re just jobs to plan, and every one of them makes your home warmer and cheaper to run anyway. Plenty of people sort the insulation one year and fit the heat pump the next.

So, the honest answer isn’t yes or no. It’s that almost every home has a route to a heat pump — some shorter, some longer. A proper survey, from someone who explains the design and its trade-offs, is how you find yours. And if the answer is “not quite yet, do the loft first”, that is not a failure. It is a plan.
